Distance traveled while accelerating
A car moving at 5 m/s accelerates at a constant 3 m/s² for 4 s. How far does it travel during those 4 s?
Answer C: explanation for every choice
A
This is v₀t alone, as if the car didn't accelerate.
B
This is ½at² alone, as if the car started from rest.
C
Correct. Δx = v₀t + ½at² = (5)(4) + ½(3)(16) = 20 + 24 = 44 m.
D
This leaves out the ½: 20 + (3)(16) = 68.
TakeawayΔx = v₀t + ½at². Don't drop either term.
